30 years ago, Mum the pakake/sea lion gave birth to the first pup on the Otago coast for 150 years.

NZ Sea Lion Trust and Department of Conservation lead the celebration of this pakake/NZ sea lion anniversary with family-friendly activities following Suzy Cato’s performance.

There will be lots of activities for all ages – make your own pakake to take home, discover what they like to eat, have a go at making an origami pakake. Learn who lives in your neighbourhood and more.

Short Documentary Screening:

"Guardian of the Sea Lions" is both informative and inspiring as we learn about 83 year old Janet Ledingham’s passion for sea lions and her role in caring for her local population as a volunteer with NZ Sea Lion Trust. for 30 years.

The film was made by Stephanie Guest and Shania Riethmann and was made through the Ocean Media Institute.

Hosted by Toitū Otago Settlers Museum: Museum of social history dedicated to telling the story of the people of Dunedin and the surrounding area. Fourteen themed galleries feature interactive displays and powerful narratives tracing the human history of the area, from the earliest settlers to the most recent arrivals.
