Eyes in the Lives of Penguins

  • Tūhura Otago Museum 419 Great King Street Dunedin, Otago, 9016 New Zealand (map)

How are penguin eyes different to those of other animals?

Join ophthalmologist Francesc March de Ribot and friends for an exciting talk about the eyes of penguins!

Vision is crucial for penguins, impacting their survival and behaviour. Adapted for underwater navigation, penguins rely on unobstructed vision to hunt efficiently and avoid predators while at sea. Their keen eyesight, adapted for low light conditions, aids in spotting prey during ocean dives.

These six, quick five-minute sessions from vision experts with time for questions at the end:

Session 1: Vision in the animal kingdom (Mark Lokman, zoologist at Otago University / Francesc March, ophthalmologist at Otago University)

Session 2: Daily life of Penguins (Thomas Mattern, zoologist at Tawaki trust / Global Penguin Society)

Session 3: What is a Cataract, and how do you fix it in a Penguin? (Francesc March, ophthalmologist at Otago University/ Peter Hadden, ophthalmologist at Auckland University)

Session 4: Rehabilitation and Release (Emma Chen, veterinarian at Wildlife Hospital)
