Fire, Clouds & Local Weather

  • Barclay Theatre, Tūhura Otago Museum 419 Great King Street Dunedin, Otago, 9016 New Zealand (map)

Paul Gorman’s fascination with the weather began when he started school and had to fill in a chart with each day's weather. His love for meteorology and cloudscapes of NZ has never wavered.

Clouds & Local Weather

Paul is a science journalist for the Otago Daily Times but has dabbled in weather forecasting since he was 7, working for the MetService, WeatherWatch and Blue Skies Weather. He has had more success writing about it over several decades.

Paul will talk about the thrill of the weather and of how Dunedin folk are lucky to have some of the most interesting and ever-changing weather in the country.

Our second speaker is James Knapp who works as Community Risk Manager for FENZ Otago (Fire and Emergency NZ). His talk will focus on nature - where the rural and urban/built environment and nature collide.

Previously wild fires were not a big problem but they are becoming more frequent, and their size and impact are increasing.

He will give advice on things to do to reduce the risk of fire and be prepared.
