Book Workshops: 10am-1pm & 10.30am-1pm

You are welcome to come and visit the gardens during the open day without any booking.

There will be two workshops happening during the open day.  Numbers are limited for the workshops so these must be booked.

Workshop 1: 10am- 1pm - Designing Permaculture Food Gardens

Sue Smith is our Māra Kai coordinator. She has been involved in permaculture in Sydney for a number of years and completed the Certificate in Permaculture design in NZ in 2021.

For this workshop participants will develop an understanding of some design principles to help them create their own food garden at home. The workshop will involve participants in a simple site analysis, we will look at the basic principles of designing a home garden, a brief look at some key concepts including planting by the maramataka.  Finally we will work together to create a no-dig garden bed. We hope that participants will go home inspired and ready to create their own home garden for food growing.

(CANCELLED) Workshop 2: 10.30am-1pm - Growing Local Native Plants

Angelina Young is our Native Nursery Manager. She has a wealth of experience in plant nurseries and is forever developing her skills and expertise in native plant propagation and planting.

Puketeraki Nursery eco-sources and grows indigenous species for restoration projects in the takiwā of Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki, and beyond. As a collective we now have some experience in these practices (collection and propagation) and some learnings that may inform your own growing efforts at home, for restoration programs or in a community nursery context.

Come with your curly questions and we will endeavour to answer them together!

Lunch at 1pm - a time to share ideas with other participants and chat with Māra Kai volunteers. Please bring kai to share.

Koha: $10pp on the day ( We ask a small koha to cover our costs for the day.)

As well there may be some plants and vegetable seedlings to purchase on the day so do bring cash.

Hosted by Kāti Huirapa ki Puketeraki Rūnaka: We are a whānau group affiliated with the Puketeraki Marae and meet on a regular basis to grow food on the whenua. In 2016 a small group of volunteer whānau came together to learn to grow healthy organic kai the way our tīpuna did. We are interested in soil health and food security and are learning together to grow and harvest food in order to build resilience and self reliance for whānau.
