Sutton Salt Lake Walk (Sold Out)

  • Sunnyvale Sports Centre 326 Main South Road Dunedin, Otago, 9018 New Zealand (map)

Otago Tramping and Mountaineering Club day trip to unique landscape within the City of Dunedin boundary. Drive time from Dunedin 50 minutes to 1 hour.

Otago Tramping and Mountaineering Club day trip to Sutton Salt Lake, New Zealand’s only inland salt lake. It has no outlet, so the lake has concentrated the salts from the surrounding soils.

The Otago Tramping and Mountaineering Club members will guide groups of walkers over the 3.5 km loop walk to Sutton Salt Lake located on a Department of Conservation Reserve.

This tramp is an easy 45-minute to 1-hour walk.

After the walk there is an opportunity to enjoy a tour of Middlemarch.

Dunedin lawyer Antony Hamel is an enthusiastic explorer of the city's many tracks and trails, and has produced an illustrated guide to Dunedin walks, tramps and mountain bike routes. The Otago Tramping and Moutaineering Club have asked him to guide this special day trip to Sutton Salt Lake and Middlemarch.

Due to the need to safely manage walkers, this trip is limited to 40 people.

Meet at Sunnyvale Sports Centre to carpool to Sutton Salt Lake and Middlemarch at 9am.

Alternatively, take your own vehicle. Sutton Salt Lake Car Park is located approximately 9.5 km from Middlemarch.

Drive south from Middlemarch towards Dunedin on SH87. Just after you cross the railway line for the second time, continue straight onto the unsealed Kidds Road - the reserve entrance is about 2.5km along this road on the left.

If driving from Dunedin, drive south of Dunedin to Outram and take SH87, heading towards Middlemarch. Turn left onto Kidds Road before you cross the railway line at Sutton. The reserve entrance is about 2.5 km along this road, on the left. Allow 50 minutes to 1 hour to drive from Sunnyvale Sports Centre.

Cost: $25pp for a carpool ride to be paid on the day.

Please select “Carpool” or “Self Drive” in the checkout below.
