Hector's Dolphins

  • Otago Museum 419 Great King Street Dunedin New Zealand (map)

Hear from University of Otago PhD student Steph Bennington on her research on the native Hector's dolphin, known also as pahu or tutumairekurai,  and the potential for populations to recover around our coastline.

Steph's research is focused on the small, local population of dolphins found around Blueskin Bay. The Hector's dolphins in Otago are less well known than their cousins in Canterbury (particularly around Banks Peninsula), but they still form an important aspect of the wider ecosystem. In this talk Steph will tell you all about fascinating local species and will introduce visitors to our small, local population of pahu that call the Ōtepoti coastline their home. Steph will be available to answer all of your pahu-related questions following the talk!

This free, family friendly talk is a contributing event to 2023's Wild Dunedin, NZ Festival of Nature.
